Hallgrímskirkja and the Rainbow Road: Icons of Reykjavík’s Spirit
Hallgrímskirkja is an iconic Lutheran church located in Reykjavík, Iceland. Standing at 74.5 meters (244 feet), it’s one of the tallest and most recognizable buildings in the country. Designed by architect Guðjón Samúelsson, the church’s unique, sweeping structure is inspired by Iceland’s natural landscapes, resembling basalt columns formed by volcanic activity. Construction began in 1945 and was completed in 1986, marking over 40 years of dedication to this architectural masterpiece. Visitors can take an elevator to the top of the tower for panoramic views of Reykjavík and the surrounding mountains, making Hallgrímskirkja a must-see for anyone visiting Iceland’s capital.
Just down from Hallgrímskirkja, the vibrant Rainbow Street (Skólavörðustígur) leads visitors toward the church and is one of Reykjavík’s most colorful landmarks. Painted in bold rainbow stripes, this pedestrian-friendly road celebrates LGBTQ+ pride and Iceland’s commitment to inclusivity. Originally painted for Reykjavík Pride, the road has become a permanent fixture due to its popularity among locals and visitors alike. The bright colors offer a lively contrast to the surrounding architecture, making it a favorite spot for photos, while adding to the city’s friendly, welcoming atmosphere.
